As far as teaching about fires, we have practiced getting out of the apartment and to a family meeting place. Once we went to a fun activity at a firestation and they draped sheets over the tops of chairs and had the kids practice crawling underneath and explained that you'd need to crawl under smoke. It wasn't scary and the kids thought it was pretty fun to crawl through a tunnel.
