Cute Kids' Costumes

It's that time again, Halloween season. Time to start thinking about costumes. In my experience, it's best to get an early start so there's still a good selection. But costumes can be really expensive, and the more kids you have, the worse it gets. So my question for the week is, where do you get your kids' costumes? Do you make them or buy them? What are some cute, homemade ideas?

For me, I like to scan stores like Savers and Goodwill. Early in the month you can find bargains like this Dalmatian costume I found for $6. I also like to make costumes and accessorize. My son wanted to be Harry Potter, so I got him a $2 broom(Savers), glasses, and made a cape out of a larger vampire cape I cut down to size.

Most girls love to be a princess, so I made this Cinderella dress for my daughter. I don't recommend it, because it was too hard to do on a deadline(I kind of waited till the week before).

But I heard Party City is having a sale on Disney Princess costumes this week for $12.99 each. I think I'll just go that route this year!

What will you be doing?

My kids always want to be something that I wouldn't be able to figure out how to make so Target works for us! :) Or... if you don't want your kids dressed as every other kid then we hit the party stores! They have tons of fun costumes if you can get your kids past the scary decorations at the front of the store!!!

My trick is to buy their costumes on clearance the morning after Halloween for the following year. It takes some healthy persuasion but since mine are 3 and under they aren't as opinionated about what their costume is.

Lots of people here use craigslist or consignment shops to save money. Usually the costumes are in good condition and you can save a lot of money.

I have a hard time coming up with adult costumes for my husband and I when we are invited to parties...any suggestions on that?

We did the flintstones when my oldest was one. I made our costumes out of a fitted twin sheet, ripped the edge seams, and used a sponge to paint the animal spots on them. It was our easiest, cutest year so far. Last year I bought tons of fabric for costumes, but ended up buying costumes on the costume rack at joanns the morning of Halloween and they were 70% off. So I got costumes for this year. A princess and an angel. I don't know what I'll do for me and my Husband. One friend gave me a hint of advice for making costumes. "If they aren't done the week before, go to plan B so you're not stressed out and sewing on the last button as they walk up to the first door to trick-or-treat." Boy do I miss Party City!

Oh, party ideas... We always go as each other. It's actually super hilarious because I'm 5'1", 135#, and he's 6'3", 270#.
